Serenity

You pull out an old looking book and turn to the very front page. There is nothing on the page except for a picture giving you a look into a small but serene island amid an endless sea. The picture appears as though the world within is moving. You flip through the pages to see if there are anymore like it. After coursing through two-hundred and fifty pages, you take note that every single page in the book, save for the front page, contained archaic symbols that you barely recognize. You backtrack to the cover and observe the picture again. Curiosity takes hold of you as you reach to touch the pictured frame of the book.

You feel as though your body is being pulled by an unseen force. The world around you fades into darkness. The pitch black void rumbles, making you drift further in. Color and light return as quick as they disappeared. You blink and find yourself standing in what looks to be a small grove. From where you are standing, the area is elevated as high as you can see throughout the distance. You realize this is the same island previously seen on the cover of the book. You turn to look behind you: Lying inside of what appears to be a shrine or a watchtower, a book on top of a small lectern. As you look inside the tower itself, you find that there are no stairs. The space inside is too cramped for one person to be in. Yet, you feel as though this is to hold the book.

The architecture of the tower is very old, but sturdy. While nature has already reclaimed the structure, you could still make out some of the material and detailing done to the exterior. It looks like marble at a glance. However, as you make your way to the tower, reaching up and brushing your hand across the rather coarse and rough stonework, you realize it isn't marble. While the detail is worn down by the elements, you can still make sense of one very particular symbol resting upon the archway. The Infinitum symbol.

You turn back to examine the island and ponder on the prospect that it was once inhabited. Though giving it another look around, you can clearly see that aside from the stone tower, there is nothing else. Only palm trees and conifers as far as the eye can see. Taking one small step forward, you start your journey into the dense jungle, passing by the thicket of ferns that stands in your way. As you call out for any sign of life, only the echoes of your own voice, the birds and the bugs greet you.

As you make your way through the jungle, the distant sound of crashing waves in the shores echoes around you. The ferns around you rustle and sway their leaves amid the gentle tropical breeze. From above, the singular sun bears down on you, giving light and warmth. This island is truly a paradise. If you had the necessary tools you could fashion yourself a house here. A day in paradise doesn't sound too bad of an idea though.

During your trek, you come upon a large and steep hillside that lays plain and bare of any trees. You climb up the hill, careful with your footing so you wouldn't slip. As you reach the flat topside, you turn your body around and drop back. You take a moment to rest and appreciate the natural beauty. The wonders of the library will still be there when you get back. The ambiance of the island soothes your entire being. From how quiet the library normally is, it feels nice to have this air of life, noise and color to your world.

The music of nature eventually puts you into a deep trance, letting you drift off into slumber that lasted for what felt like hours. The air then begins to cool. The orange glow from the sun disappears from the world, replaced with a moonlit night. A bright orange ball amid a sea of stars and colorful nebulae laid there to greet you as you awaken. The island feels a lot calmer and quieter now than it did before with the birds laying silent. Only the bugs are awake to keep you company. Echoes of the crashing waves continue to resonate around you. As much as living here forever feels appealing, you tread your way back to the tower. After all, it will still be here for when you come back.

Rather than taking the same path back, you make way to the sandy shores. The cool sea breeze is much more prominent closer to the waters than what you were used to in daylight. You kick off your shoes and socks, immersing yourself in the environment. With the cries of the gulls, the water beating at the sands, the gentle breeze of the sea's wind, you soak in the atmosphere. You dig your feet into the sand, caking your feet in the comforting grains of nature's product. Out in the distant, ever expanding horizon, you could see more stars blanketing the skies. Among that, you can see the rising and falling waves in the distance, signs of what looks to be sea mammals. Yet, you can see some didn't look like those you are familiar with. At this distance, it is hard to see, and you didn't want to risk swimming out to open waters in the event there could be predators.

With that, you spend another few minutes only to clean yourself off of any sand on your person. You slip back on your shoes and continue your way to the tower. You stop for a moment, as you are close to the entrance of the jungle, turn back and gaze at what looks to be a gas planet so far out into the distance. It had a beautiful mixture of color ranging from purple to orange, complimenting each other in what you can only imagine is a storm. From the moment you stepped into the library, you always felt this sense of wonder, despite all the dangers that came with this gift. Only now though you appreciate the library for what it is. A wonder with underlying levels of wonders in not just its world, but how it is connected to other worlds. The rush of adventure fills your entire being.

You reach the tower and approach the lectern. The process is the same as when you first picked up the book in the library. Opening the page, you could see the picture within the cover. The picture shows the endless aisles of the library just as you remember it. You can see the picture panning down the endless aisle, stopping just short of a book laying on the floor. Gracing your finger over the cover page, you find once more that the world around you fades to black. The rumbling of the void now so familiar to you a second time around signified your return to the library.

As you blink, you find yourself back in the library. You turn around, looking up one side of the aisle to the next. As you turn back to the shelf, you look down to see the book laying on the floor, just like how it looked from that other world. You kneel down to pick it up and shelve it. If you had yourself a marker, maybe it would be a good idea to mark this section of the library for next time. Maybe you could find similar books like this. You continue your travels.
