A library of the library

In your travels you come across a small, hardcover journal nesting between two novels, bearing a smudge of green paint on the book's spine. You pull it from the shelf to read.

I figured I might as well start writing something here. Today, my uncle got me this pretty old but decent looking journal for my birthday. I have to admit, it wasn't exactly what I was expecting but you never know when it'll come in handy.

Today was pretty hectic at work. Had a few chucklefucks who thought it was a good idea to stuff their pocket full of DVDs and walk out as if no one would ever notice. I mean, its not like video stores these days are that dead that guys like me won't give a shit if they make off with what hardly cost more than fifteen bucks. (Unless of course, it was them 4k or Blueray DVDs.) The Video Star's still doing good business. I mean, sure we're local and small but there are still some people who exist that don't want to pay subscription to video services for shows and movies that probably aren't even available as they are on other platforms.

Found this weird bookstore in downtown the other day. I swear it wasn't there before and just looking at it gave me the chills. I was about fifteen minutes away from starting my shift when I decided to stop by to look. There were a lot of books. I think most of them were fantasy books. Other's sci-fi, standard fiction, horror and mystery. Though some of them were written as though they were actual historical events, or a diary of sorts. I didn't get to look at the stuff they had there for too long but I figured I'd return when my shift was done. When my shift did end and I stopped by the street where I found it, the library was gone. Nothing but an abandoned corner-store took its place.

I decided to call in sick one morning and decided to take a trip downtown. There was no way I was imagining that library. People were going in and out of it. When I asked the people that were leaving the library about seeing this spot abandoned before, they just shrugged off my question. One person admitted that he had noticed after five days of doing his own personal investigation. He just gave up looking into it and never questioned it further.

Now, when I went into the library, I motioned through every aisle to see what kind of books they had. None of them were categorized properly. I mean, some were but not all of them. Though I found something within the library that nearly had me running out that store. I found a copy of my journal. This very same journal that I am writing in as of right fucking now.

Not only that, but it had my own handwriting in it. It was exactly like how I would have written in it. Like this journal, the last entry I made was on the 10th. I asked the bookkeeper to explain why there was a copy of my journal in the library. The man just smiled at me and winked. 'You'll see tomorrow,' he said.

Checked out the bookstore again and looked for a copy of my journal. Never did figure out the meaning behind the bookkeeper's words. Of course, I found a copy. Yesterday's date was updated into the page. Something completely took over me. Maybe it was how batshit fucking insane this was and how impossible it could have been for my book to exist in another place and have it be updated. Either way, I had purchased the other journal and I took it home with me after I was done work. I set the mother fucker on fire because I have no idea why. I don't know what was going in my head at the moment. Maybe I was thinking that if I destroyed the journal, it'll probably never show up again in the library. Or maybe I was just losing my mind.

Checked the bookstore. The journal came back.

Decided to test out the extent of this shit a bit more. I bought a copy at the bookstore with the intent to burn it and my original journal. Just in case I am not suffering a complete and mental breakdown thinking this is all in my head. So uhh… I'll have to apologize to uncle for burning his gift he got for me.

Went to the bookstore because I had to know for sure that they were gone. Words could not describe what I was feeling when I stumbled upon another copy of my journal in the library. I decided to buy the journal but with the intent to keep it and continue on where I left off. Because it was the only rational thing I thought I should do. Just as I was about to leave, the bookkeeper stopped me to assure me that there was nothing wrong with me and this is how the extension of the Librorum Infinitum works. I asked him what does that mean?
His response was, 'infinite books.'

I became a regular at the library now. Usually come in before my shift starts to try and learn more. The bookkeeper told me that if I wanted to know more, I'd have to stay when the library closes, but he can't assure me I will be safe when we make the transition. 'Transition?' I asked. The keeper smiled and said to me, 'Yes. To the Librorum Infinitum.'

After the last entry, you flip ahead to see if he had written anymore. You arch your head up to look around, wondering what could be making and replacing these books. With nothing else in mind, you shelve the journal back to where you found it as you continue your travels.
